This is one of the oldest known Czech carols, possibly from the 13th century. The melody was preserved with the Latin text “En Virgo Parit Filium”. Later it was adapted into the German carol “Freu dich, Erd und Sternenzelt” The original melody was in a dance like triple meter, while the modern version is in duple meter with the raised fourth in the opening phrase. In this setting, both versions are presented with the modern hymn segueing to the older triple meter dance with drone bass.
